Lecture notes
Jo Lathwood (6.2)
I am most taken by Jo's early works that describe an incredible self motivation at the point of graduating & following that through to securing space to make work & put on shows. The created structures speak to me as the use of space & forms are a kin to my own practice. These works are separated by 5 years but illustrate a strong work ethic that has propelled her career after graduating. Jo's lecture focused partly on how she worked towards residencies & working in a shared space in Bristol. This drive towards making & showing work is surely what all art students are aiming for.
Seeing the scale of the work that Jo has managed to make is very encouraging. It has only come from a passion for practice & hard work, this really shone through in the way the lecture proceeded. The images of two works are a small portion of Jo's work in the 10 years since graduating Ba, here you can see Jo Lathwood's website to see more.
Marie Lund (20.2)
Marie presented a concise lecture with a rich text that accompanied images of her work. There is a high emphasis on Texture, Surface & Process in her work & this rang through for me.
Notes from the lecture:
Sculpture Time Body
Surface & content
The imprint where the concrete met the mould.
Surface. Surface is not just a view of what is beneath. It is a thing in reflection to something else, a surface is one side & the other is inside.
Marie enjoys using a material herself instead of handing it over to an expert who has mastered a material. She is able to push material in a more naive way.
